About New Delhi
Delhi sometimes referred to as Dilli is the capital of India. It is a second largest metropolis in India after Mumbai. The city has two distinct parts, Old Delhi & New Delhi. Old Delhi is centered on the Red Fort built by Emperor Shah Jahan. The streets of Old Delhi are narrow & bustling. The beauty & serenity lies inside the courts of the main buildings. Weather / Climate
The best time to visit Delhi is in October-November and in February-March, when the nights are cool and the days filled with mellow sunshine. December and January can be a little gloomy in Delhi while May, June and July is very hot with temperatures over 45C; it is a dry heat and is sometimes accompanied by dusty desert winds. Most of the rain falls between July and September but they are not the tropical.
Religion
Delhi's culture has been influenced by its lengthy history and historic association as the capital of India. This is exemplified by the many monuments of significance found in the city. Religious festivals include Diwali, the festival of light, Guru Nanak's Birthday, Durga Puja, Holi, Lohri, Maha Shivaratri, Eid ul-Fitr, Eid ul-Adha and Buddha Jayanti. Even though Hindus form the majority, almost 85%, India does not impose any official religion on its people. Through the ages Delhi has accepted, adapted and molded itself to everything from the Aryan culture to Christianity. It adopted itself with the changing faces of history. It got destroyed many times but has retained the culture, heritage, religion and the tradition of its time for the generations to come.
Delhi Currency
The currency is the Rupee (INR), which is divided into 100 paisa. Major currencies can be changed at banks, and authorized bureaux de change. It is impossible to obtain rupees outside India, but no matter what time you arrive in India there will be an exchange office open at the airport.
Getting there
Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) is situated in the southwestern corner of Delhi and serves for domestic and international connections.It is near to Palam Airport which is a domestic Airport. In 2005-06, the IGI airport recorded a traffic of more than 8.5 million passengers,[52] making it one of the busiest airports in South Asia. Safdarjung Airport is the other airfield in Delhi used for general aviation purpose Fleets of metered taxis and auto-rickshaws clog the streets of Delhi providing transport for locals and visitors. Rates fluctuate, but drivers should have rate charts available and tourists should ensure the meter is reset or a price negotiated before departure. Public transport in Delhi is provided by buses, auto rickshaws, a rapid transit system, taxis and suburban railways. Buses are the most popular means of transport catering to about 60% of the total demand. Railways served only 1% of the local traffic until 2003. However Delhi is a major junction in the rail map of India and is the headquarters of the Northern Railway. The four main railway stations are Old Delhi, Nizamuddin Railway Station, Sarai Rohilla and New Delhi Railway Station.
