About Canada

Canada is the second largest country in the world by total area. Occupying most of northern North America, it extends from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west and northward into the Arctic Ocean.

Canada offers a range of experiences for visitors that are as wide as the land itself. Canada offers something to suit the taste of every traveler. The name Canada comes from a St. Lawrence Iroquoian word meaning "village" or "settlement."

Canada remains a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state, and maintains a parliamentary democracy. A federation comprising ten provinces and three territories, Canada is a bilingual and multicultural country, with both English and French as official languages at the federal level.

Weather / Climate

Canada also has very distinct seasons. The warmest months are July and August, and in winter from December to February, it is very cold with heavy snowfalls. Western and south-eastern Canada experience high rainfall, but the Prairies are dry with 250 mm to 500 mm of rain every year.

Religion

Canada has a wide mix of religions, but it has no official religion, and support for religious pluralism is an important part of Canada's political culture. However, most people report they are Christians, and this is reflected in several aspects of Canadian life.
Canada Currency

The currency used is the Canadian Dollar (CAD), which is divided into 100 cents. One-dollar coins are also known as loonies, and two-dollar coins as toonies.
Getting there

Most international visitors fly into Canada. The major gateway cities are Vancouver (YVR) on the west coast, and Toronto (YYZ) in central Canada.

Most airlines , both transatlantic and internal, will do whatever they can to ease your journey, and will usually allow attendants of more seriously disabled people to accompany them at no extra charge - Air Canada is the best-equipped carrier.

Although buses are obliged to carry disabled passengers if their wheelchairs fit in the luggage compartment, access is often difficult.
